What Is a Well Pump Control Box?
If you have a submersible well pump, you may have a control box mounted on a wall near your pressure tank or electrical panel. It is an unassuming enclosure, but for certain pump motors it plays a critical role in getting the pump started and keeping it running. Not every system has one, which is why many homeowners are unsure what it does.
The control box contains electrical components that help the pump motor start under load. Because it handles significant voltage and can store an electrical charge even when power is off, it is firmly a component for a licensed provider to service, never a homeowner.
What the control box does
Many three-wire submersible pumps rely on a control box located above ground. The starting components that a two-wire pump keeps down in the well are instead housed in this box. When the pressure switch calls for the pump to run, the control box helps deliver the extra jolt the motor needs to begin turning against the weight of the water above it.
Once the motor is up to speed, the control box steps back and lets the pump run normally. This start assistance is important because a submersible motor has to overcome considerable resistance every time it starts, and a clean, strong start reduces stress on the motor.
What is typically inside
- A start capacitor, and sometimes a run capacitor, which store and release electrical energy to help the motor start and run smoothly.
- A starting relay or switch that brings the start components into the circuit at the right moment and then removes them once the motor is running.
- Terminal connections and wiring that link the control box to the pressure switch, the power supply, and the pump wire running down the well.
- An overload protector in many designs, which helps guard the motor against damage from excessive heat or current.
- An enclosure that keeps these components together and protected, usually mounted indoors or in a sheltered location above ground.
Why it can hold a dangerous charge
The capacitors inside a control box can store electrical energy even after the power has been switched off. That stored charge can deliver a serious shock to anyone who opens the box without the proper training and tools to discharge it safely. This is not a component to open out of curiosity.
For this reason, testing, discharging, and replacing anything inside a control box is strictly the job of a licensed provider. There is no routine homeowner maintenance to perform inside the box, and the safest approach is to leave it closed.
Signs the control box may be involved
When a control box or its internal components fail, the pump may fail to start, may hum without turning, may trip the breaker, or may start and stop erratically. Because these same symptoms can come from the pump motor itself, the wiring, or the pressure switch, the box is only one of several possible causes.
