What Is a Pitless Adapter?
A pitless adapter is a specialized fitting that connects your well's vertical casing to the horizontal water line that runs to your house, all while staying safely below ground. It solves an old and important problem: how to route water out of a well without exposing the connection to freezing temperatures or surface contamination.
It is a small part that homeowners rarely see, but it does a big job. Understanding it explains how water leaves your well underground and why the connection is buried rather than sitting up at the wellhead.
The problem it solves
Water has to travel from the well casing to your home through a buried supply line. If that connection were made above ground or in a shallow pit, it would be exposed to freezing in winter and to surface water and debris that could contaminate the well. Older systems sometimes used a below-ground well pit for the connection, but pits could flood and became a contamination risk.
The pitless adapter replaces the pit entirely. It makes the connection through the side of the well casing, below the frost line, so the water line stays underground and protected. This is why it earns the name pitless: it lets the connection happen without a well pit.
How a pitless adapter works
The adapter comes in two mating parts. One part is sealed into a hole in the side of the casing, and the other connects to the drop pipe and pump assembly inside the well. The two parts slide together with a watertight seal, allowing water coming up from the pump to divert horizontally out to the supply line.
Cleverly, the design also allows the pump and drop pipe to be lifted straight out of the well for service. A provider can disconnect the inner half of the adapter and pull the whole pump assembly up through the casing, then reseat it when the work is done. This makes servicing a submersible pump possible without digging up the yard.
